I have been reviewing films all my life, semi-professionally in the past and for the past 10 or 12 years on imdb and more recently in letterboxd and facebook. The idea of this blog is to get as many of those reviews gathered together in one place. I have had a great deal of support and encouragement from a lot of people throughout the world and I hope that continues. Now for the ratings. **** = not to be missed. *** = highly recommended. ** = recommended. * = of interest and no stars = avoid..

THE CROODS ***
The animation in THE CROODS is jaw-droppingly good, (Roger Deakins gets a
'visual consultant' credit), and, guess what, the script is pretty
darned nifty, too. The Croods are a family of cave people adjusting to
the transition from prehistoric times to something, shall we say, a
little more modern as daughter Eve finds herself with a boyfriend who
isn't just handsome but actually has a brain as well and knows how to
make fire. Considering how many animated films these days go in for
hi-tech effects this is really quite simplistic without losing any of
its considerable visual charm and is all the better for it. It's also
very funny in a way that will appeal to both children and their parents;
in other words, it's a treat for the entire family.
